MISS PANKHURST'S UTTERANGES
COMMENTS BY MR. R. C. STEWART. |
Speaking last night in Bendigo, Mr. R. C. Stewart said : - “ You have here in your midst Miss Pankhurst, who in the Town Hall on Wednesday night, proved herself to be the high priestess of (H) unpattroitism. Her address was, from the beginning to end, a convert appeal to Australians to give up the war. Were this, however, her only guilt. I should not have undertaken the uneviable task of denouncing an opponent of the other sex. But I stand here to-night to charge this woman, who at Eaglehawk said “a returned soldier with one arm was not as good as a cold-footer with two.” with having said in the Guild Hall in her debate with the Rev. Mr. Heathcote that the leaders of Australia will not only conscript your sons for foreign service, but will consript your girls and send them forth for the use of soldiers as harlots. ” Women of Australia, will you suffer your fathers and husbands be branded with this crime, against raids by the Huns on French maidens sink into insignnificance? As a scion of an honoured Liberal Australian statesman I repudiate her charge. In the name of our National candidates, I denounce her utterance as unwomanly and untrue. As a humble admirer of the man whose tinges penciled the manguacharta of Australia's motherhood, whose maternal legislation has relieved the birth-pangs of ten thousand mother hearts, as a man, a husband and a father I appeal to the great sisterhood of Australian women to cast the words of this stranger from your minds, strenthening the arms of your national leaders, work and vote for God and home and right on Saturday next.
